The Project
The ITER project — the world’s largest international nuclear fusion experiment, involving 35 nations and decades of scientific collaboration — sets a standard of precision that leaves no room for compromise at any stage, including logistics. When critical auxiliary components needed to move across international borders, Nabros was trusted to manage the operation.
Two Auxiliary Cold Box Modules, each measuring 560 × 520 × 462 cm and forming a combined consignment of 58,500 kg across 269.07 CBM, required end-to-end multimodal management from Italy to France — with the kind of care and technical discipline that scientific cargo of this nature demands.
The Challenge
Cold Box Modules for a nuclear fusion project are not standard industrial cargo. They are precision-engineered scientific components where physical integrity is inseparable from functional integrity — any damage, however minor, carries consequences that extend far beyond the logistics chain.
The dimensions and combined weight of the two units required specialised handling at every stage — road transport to the port of loading, vessel selection and stowage, cross-border documentation, and final delivery coordination in France. The international dimension added customs and regulatory compliance requirements across two European jurisdictions, each with their own documentation and clearance protocols.
For a project of ITER’s significance, on-time and intact delivery was the only acceptable outcome.
The Execution
Load Engineering & Handling
Each Cold Box Module was assessed for its structural requirements, lift points, and securing specifications before movement began. Specialised handling equipment and procedures were implemented at every touchpoint — from the point of origin in Italy through to final delivery in France.
Multimodal Coordination
The movement involved coordinated road and sea transportation — requiring precise scheduling and handover management between modes to maintain the integrity of the cargo and the timeline of the operation. Each modal transition was planned and supervised directly by Nabros’ operations team.
Cross-Border Documentation & Customs
International customs documentation for both Italian export and French import requirements was managed in full — ensuring seamless clearance at the border without delay or compliance risk.
Final Delivery
Both units were delivered to the ITER facility in France safely and on schedule — completing the full origin-to-destination scope under Nabros’ management.
The Outcome
Both Auxiliary Cold Box Modules arrived intact, on time, and to the exacting standards that a project of ITER’s scale demands. The assignment reflects the level of trust placed in Nabros for technically sensitive, internationally complex cargo — and the capability to honour that trust completely.
