The Project
When Nova Wind, one of Russia’s leading wind energy developers, needed to export 1,200 wind turbine blades from India to Novorossiysk, the scale and complexity of the assignment demanded a logistics partner with complete end-to-end capability — from factory floor to vessel hook, across two countries and thousands of kilometres of open sea.
Nabros was appointed to manage the entire operation.
The Challenge
An export movement of this scale presented challenges at every stage. The blades — oversized, fragile, and requiring specialised handling at every touchpoint — had to be transported from the manufacturing facility in Dobbaspet, Karnataka to Tuticorin Port, loaded onto chartered vessels, cleared through customs, and delivered safely to Novorossiysk across multiple shipments.
Each shipment carried 39 blades per vessel — requiring precise load planning, vessel compatibility assessment, and port coordination to ensure safe stowage and structural integrity throughout the voyage. Any error at any stage — during road transport, port handling, or vessel loading — carried the risk of damage to high-value cargo and delays to a wind energy project on an international timeline.
The operation also required full compliance with Indian export regulations, Russian import requirements, and the customs frameworks of both countries — adding a significant documentation and compliance dimension to an already complex logistics assignment.
The Execution
Factory Transportation
Each blade was transported from the Dobbaspet facility to Tuticorin Port using specialised blade trailers, with dedicated escort vehicles and pre-planned routes to manage the oversized dimensions on public roads. Route surveys were conducted in advance to identify and address constraints — narrow roads, low bridges, sharp turns — before the first blade moved.
Port Operations
At Tuticorin, Nabros managed all port-side operations — coordinating with port authorities for berth allocation, supervising blade offloading from road trailers, and overseeing safe lay-down and storage within the port premises prior to vessel loading.
Vessel Chartering
Nabros arranged full vessel charters for each shipment, selecting vessels with the deck space, crane capacity, and structural specifications required for safe blade stowage. With 39 blades per shipment across multiple voyages, vessel scheduling and slot coordination were managed to align with the overall project timeline.
Customs Clearance
As a licensed Custom House Agent, Nabros handled all export documentation and customs clearance in-house — ensuring accurate classification, duty compliance, and timely clearance without reliance on third-party agents. This in-house capability was critical to maintaining shipment schedules across a multi-voyage operation.
Vessel Hook Delivery
Each shipment was completed with precision vessel hook delivery — blades loaded directly onto the chartered vessel under Nabros’ supervision, with load securing and stowage verified before departure.
The Outcome
All 1,200 blades were exported successfully across multiple shipments, with each voyage executed on schedule and without incident. The Nova Wind project stands as one of the largest wind blade export operations managed by an Indian logistics company, and a demonstration of Nabros’ capability to handle complex, multi-shipment international assignments from a single point of responsibility.
