The Project
India’s power infrastructure depends on heavy equipment moving through roads that were not designed for it. When BHEL needed a 466.26 MT reactor transported from its Haridwar facility to NRPC Gadarwara in Madhya Pradesh, the route presented a specific engineering problem — four sharply inclined hilly stretches near Gwalior, each presenting 90-degree turns on narrow roads, with a load that could not simply be manoeuvred through them by conventional means.
Nabros engineered a solution before the reactor moved a metre.
The Challenge
A 466.26 MT reactor measuring 10.2 m × 5.1 m × 4.8 m is not simply a heavy load — it is a load whose dimensions and weight distribution create a specific set of mechanical constraints when navigating turns. On flat, wide roads, these constraints are manageable. On sharply inclined hilly stretches presenting 90-degree turns on narrow roads, they become an engineering problem.
The four challenging sections near Gwalior required the convoy to execute 90-degree turns on inclined terrain — a combination that places simultaneous demands on the trailer configuration, the puller vehicle, and the precision of the operators that no standard approach could satisfy.
The reactor was a mission-critical component for a national power project. It had to reach Gadarwara intact and on time.
The Execution
TIGER Girder Bridge — Engineering the Solution
Nabros deployed a specially designed TIGER Girder Bridge for this movement — an engineering solution purpose-built for longitudinal beam-like load structures. The TIGER Girder Bridge distributes the load equally between two sets of multi-axle trailers, effectively changing the mechanical relationship between the cargo and the road surface.
This configuration provided two critical advantages for the Gwalior sections: it allowed the reactor’s weight to be distributed across a wider trailer footprint, reducing the point loads on the road surface, and it gave the convoy the flexibility needed to navigate 90-degree turns on inclined terrain without the rigidity constraints of a single-trailer configuration.
Route Survey & Pre-Movement Preparation
The full corridor from Haridwar to Gadarwara was surveyed before mobilisation — with particular focus on the four Gwalior sections. Each turn was assessed for geometry, gradient, surface condition, and the specific approach and exit lines required for the TIGER Girder Bridge configuration to navigate successfully. Approach paths were prepared and cleared before the convoy arrived at each section.
Gwalior Section Navigation
Each of the four sharply inclined sections was approached, navigated, and exited under direct supervision — with Nabros’ escort team and operations supervisors present at each turn. The combination of the TIGER Girder Bridge configuration and experienced operator teams allowed the convoy to move through terrain that would have been impassable for a conventional single-trailer setup.
Convoy Management
The movement was supervised throughout by a dedicated escort team — vehicles positioned at every convoy position, with an Escort Supervisor coordinating the operation from the most challenging sections through to delivery.
The Outcome
The 466.26 MT reactor reached NRPC Gadarwara ahead of schedule — four 90-degree turns on inclined terrain navigated without incident, using an engineering solution designed specifically for this movement. The project is a demonstration of what separates engineering-led logistics from conventional heavy transport: the willingness to design the solution before moving the cargo.
