The Project
Some assignments define a company. This was one of them.
When HMEL required the transportation of a 971 MT VGO HDT ODW Reactor from Mundra Port to its refinery in Bhatinda, Punjab, the scale of the challenge was unlike anything attempted on Indian roads at the time. The heaviest load ever transported across the longest stretch in the country — crossing three states, navigating infrastructure that was never designed for a load of this magnitude, and doing so on time.
Nabros took the assignment.
The Challenge
A 971 MT reactor does not simply move. It requires the road to be engineered around it.
The corridor from Mundra Port to Bhatinda spans Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab — three states with vastly different road conditions, infrastructure quality, and administrative jurisdictions. Every kilometre of the route presented a potential obstacle. Bridges built for ordinary traffic, canals cutting across the path, railway overbridges with clearances designed for standard vehicles, and roads in varying states of repair — none of it was built for a load approaching a thousand metric tonnes.
The convoy’s gross weight on the trailer configuration meant that standard bridge crossings were simply not an option. Canals required purpose-built crossings. Railway overbridges required engineered detours. And the sheer length of the corridor — crossing three state borders — meant that permissions, coordination, and oversight had to be maintained simultaneously across multiple government jurisdictions, highway authorities, and local administrations.
For HMEL, whose refinery operations depended on this reactor, failure was not a contingency that could be planned for. It had to be designed out entirely.
The Execution
Route Survey & Engineering
Before a single wheel moved, Nabros conducted a comprehensive route survey across the entire corridor. Every bridge, every canal crossing, every railway overbridge, and every stretch of road was assessed for load-bearing capacity, clearance, and geometry. The survey identified 68 major and minor bridges, 19 canal crossings, and 12 railway overbridges that could not be negotiated using existing infrastructure.
For each obstacle, a solution was engineered in advance.
Bridge Bypasses — 68 Structures
Sixty-eight major and minor bridges along the corridor were assessed as unsuitable for the 971 MT load. For each, Nabros constructed specially designed bypasses — temporary structures built to carry the full gross weight of the loaded trailer configuration safely across. Each bypass was engineered, fabricated, installed, and inspected before the convoy approached.
Canal Crossings — 19 Trestle Bridges
Nineteen canals crossed the route between Mundra and Bhatinda. With no existing bridge capable of supporting the load, Nabros designed and fabricated 19 custom Trestle Bridges — temporary crossing structures purpose-built for this specific movement. Each Trestle Bridge was installed, load-tested, and cleared before the convoy crossed.
Railway Overbridge Bypasses — 12 Structures
Twelve railway overbridges along the corridor presented clearance and load constraints that made standard passage impossible. For each, Nabros constructed dedicated bypass structures — coordinating with railway authorities and highway departments to ensure safe, compliant diversion of the convoy without disruption to rail operations.
Statutory Permissions & Multi-State Coordination
The movement required permissions from MORTH, NHAI, PWD, Railway authorities, RTO offices, and State Electricity Boards across three states. Nabros managed the full permissions framework — obtaining every statutory clearance required before mobilisation and maintaining coordination with authorities throughout the movement.
Convoy Management
The convoy moved under continuous escort supervision — with dedicated vehicles at every position, an Escort Supervisor overseeing the operation, and real-time coordination between field teams and the operations centre throughout the corridor.
The Outcome
The 971 MT reactor reached HMEL Bhatinda safely — the heaviest load transported across the longest stretch in India at the time of execution, delivered on time and without incident. Sixty-eight bypasses built. Nineteen trestle bridges fabricated and installed. Twelve railway diversions constructed. Three states coordinated. One reactor delivered.
