117 MT Locomotive on Global Tracks

Scope: International Freight Forwarding · Breakbulk Chartering · Project Logistics
Origin: Mumbai Port, India
Destination: Angamos, Chile
Cargo: 3300 HP Refurbished Diesel Locomotive (ALCO-WDM-3D)
Weight: 117 MT

The Project

A refurbished diesel locomotive does not move like conventional cargo. At 117 MT, single-piece, and oversized by any standard measure, it demands a logistics partner with genuine technical capability — one that understands railway engineering equipment, international port operations, and the complexity of moving a single critical consignment across two continents without a single point of failure.

Nabros managed the entire export operation from Mumbai to Angamos, Chile.

The Challenge

The ALCO-WDM-3D locomotive presented a specific set of challenges that are rarely encountered in standard freight forwarding. As a single-piece oversized consignment, it could not be disassembled, repackaged, or handled with conventional equipment at any stage of the journey.

Every lift, every placement, every securing and stowage decision carried the full structural and financial weight of the cargo. The international dimension added further complexity — export documentation, customs clearance, vessel selection capable of safely accommodating 117 MT of railway equipment, and coordination across Mumbai Port and the receiving port at Angamos required flawless execution from first movement to final delivery.

For the client, there was no room for delay or error. The locomotive was a high-value asset, and its safe arrival was non-negotiable.

The Execution

Load Engineering & Equipment Selection
Before the locomotive moved a metre, Nabros assessed its dimensions, weight distribution, and structural characteristics to determine the correct trailer configuration, lift points, and securing methodology. Every decision was engineered, not assumed.

Port Operations & Vessel Loading
At Mumbai Port, Nabros supervised the full loading operation — coordinating with port authorities, crane operators, and vessel crew to ensure the locomotive was lifted, positioned, and secured to specification. The one-piece nature of the consignment meant that every stage of the port operation required direct technical oversight.

Vessel Selection & Chartering
Nabros identified and arranged a vessel with the deck capacity, crane specifications, and structural capability to safely accommodate 117 MT of railway equipment for an intercontinental voyage. Vessel scheduling was aligned with port availability and the client’s delivery timeline.

Export Customs Clearance
All export documentation — including classification, valuation, and regulatory compliance for both India and Chile — was managed in-house, ensuring timely clearance without reliance on third-party agents.

International Coordination
Throughout the voyage, Nabros maintained coordination across both the origin and destination ports — ensuring receiving teams at Angamos were prepared and aligned for the locomotive’s arrival.

The Outcome

The ALCO-WDM-3D locomotive arrived safely at Angamos, Chile — 117 MT of high-value railway engineering equipment, moved across two continents with precision and without incident. The project stands as a demonstration of Nabros’ international freight capability and its ability to handle technically demanding, single-piece oversized consignments on global routes.
